Sales Tax for Printers Seminar
Tuesday, September 9, 2008
with Gerry Bonetto
The State Board of Equalization continually amends the sales and use tax rules for the printing industry. The changes are often subtle and go unnoticed by even the most seasoned veterans in our industry who work in this area.
As in the past, the one constant is the nerve racking sales tax audit. You’ve all been there or, at least, heard stories from your colleagues about these encounters. Inevitably the auditor identifies a number of products and transactions that you should have taxed but didn’t.
Every printer (and prepress house) must be aware of application of the sales and use tax regulations for our industry (i.e., Regulations 1502, 1541, 1541.5, 1590). Improperly implemented, these regulations, and several others that apply to our industry, expose your company to substantial tax liability down the road. More specifically, the way you deal with (and invoice) printing aids, computer generated work, artwork, direct mail, computer downloads, and other items is critical to your bottom line.
Join PIA/SD and Gerry Bonetto for this important, "hands on" program. Gerry will demonstrate how you should implement the changes by using sample invoices from companies within the printing industry. You’ll be able to see the options available to your company and ask questions on how to modify your procedures to take advantage of the changes.
We have worked extensively with the State Board of Equalization to develop a program that is both accurate and effective. The speaker is Gerry Bonetto, Ph.D., Director of Government Affairs for the Printing Industries of California (PIC). Gerry is editor of the Guide to California Sales and Use Tax for the Graphic Arts Industry. He has advised scores of printers facing sales tax audits and is considered as the expert in this area.
The workshop will focus on the everyday problems you face in assessing California sales and use tax. We will cover the taxability of:
- Printing, fabrication, and services
- Special printing aids and passage of title
- Special charges such as alterations, overtime and handling
- Electronic data management
- Design and artwork
- Proposed procedures for reporting quarterly taxes
- Printing exemptions
